First Friday Open House // 10 East Arts Artist Spotlight: Becky Wilson presenting 'Spring Cleaning'

  • Re:Public 2301 East 10th Street Indianapolis, IN, 46201 United States (map)

“Spring Cleaning” after Carla Knopp is not just a metaphor but an actual purge of materials that artist Carla Knopp gave Becky Wilson a few years back when they both had studios in the Circle City Industrial Complex (now Factory Arts District). This work showcases abstracted floral arrangements using deconstructed plastic flowers, common crafting materials, and items collected along the journey of Wilson’s forty-year studio art career.

The elements are assembled onto organic-shaped substrates into visually delightful and ethereal experiences that suggest other worlds while still hinting at possible narratives. The result is a fun and playful body of colorful works that reflect Wilson’s own enjoyment of exploring what can be done with the materials.

“I consider these pieces to be a collaboration of sorts,” says Wilson. “It’s impossible to get the Carla out of the materials she gave me. I have embraced them.”

This event is presented by 10 East Arts.

About Becky Wilson

Becky Wilson is a celebrated Indianapolis artist whose career spans over four decades, weaving together her life experiences, reflections, and artistic innovations. Her work encompasses painting, assemblage, and multimedia works that sometimes explore themes that question social norms of American culture, sometimes reflect on the experiences of women in her life, and sometimes present as topical narratives that are imbued with deeper personal meaning and experiences.

A graduate of the Herron School of Art and Design, Becky was a founding member of the 431 Gallery on Massachusetts Avenue in the 1980s, a pivotal moment in her career that solidified her role as a leading artist in the community. Recognized as one of Indianapolis Monthly magazine’s "85 People to Watch in 1985," she has continued to push artistic boundaries ever since.

Becky’s art uniquely incorporates discarded materials and gothic design elements, elevating cultural icons and reimagining the familiar. Upon returning to Indianapolis after a transformative period in Southern California, her commitment to community and collaboration led her to co-found the Stutz Artists Association and the Stutz Artist Residency Program.

Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the country and is included in private and institutional collections. Through her art, Becky channels resilience and reinvention, offering profound commentary on societal structures while celebrating the power of creative expression.
